Effects of Nursing Periods at Cold Highland and Gibberellic acid Application on Prevention of Dwarfing in Strawberry Plants

Abstract
Nurseries of Hokowase, Hottawonder, Benitsuru, Armore, Redgrow and Daehakilho strawberry were planted, for raising, at cold-high land (700m above sea-level) on Aug. 11 in 1976.
On four different date, or Sept. 23 (43 days of nursing), Sept. 30 (50 days), Oct. 8 (58days) and Oct. 15 (65days), nurseries were transplanted to the warm plain land, and their characteristics were investigated.
Among the above varieties, Hokowase, Armore and Benitsuru were sprayed with 0, 20, 40, and 60 ppm GA after stabilization in the field, and some characteristics of these strawberry plants investigated. Results obtained are summerized as follows;
Number of leaves of these plants raised for 58 and 65 days at cold-high land, was more increased than these of 43 and 50 days, and that trend was conspicuous, especially in ever-bearing Hokowase, Hottawonder and Benitsuru, plant length (leaf length) was not affected by the raising periods and varieties, and the length of ever-bearing varieties, which grow and develop continuously, was not observed to elongate.
Yields were higher in the ever-bearing varieties, and Hokowase was considered as the most adap table for the winter condition.
Treatments with 40 and 60 ppm GA were effective to elongate the length of leaf (plant) and flower stalk, especially in Hokowase and Armore, while they didn¢¥t affect any number of leaves.
Yields were generally increased by high concentration treatments of GA (40, 60ppm). In Benitsuru, however, yield was rather decreased by treatment of 60 ppm GA, elongation of flower stalk was observed in the plots treated with 20 ppm GA.
It was believed that, with combination of raising at cold-high land for about 60 days and treatment with 40, 60 ppm GA, Hokowase and Armore can be grown economically for the purpose of forcing or semiforcing, in Jeju Area.
